Trailer Tuesday: The Shaman (2015)

This is another week where I stumbled upon a trailer for a movie I have heard nothing about, but was intrigued by the preview image in YouTube. And when the image of the child was combined with the idea of a group of shamans on a science fiction battlefield, I had to check it out!

IMDb has the summary as:

“The dark year 2204, in a world that has seen 73 years of continuous war. The face of conflict has changed. People kill people but they now rely on giant, intelligent battle machines to fight. Meanwhile, mankind has re-discovered the arts of magic and Shamanism and the Generals on both sides use well-trained spiritual warriors to face the threat of machines. Shamans have special senses; they are experts in all aspects of the “unseen” and the “beyond”. They believe that every person, animal, plant and object has a soul. When crossing the border to the Netherworld, the Shaman can find this soul and interact with it. That is what makes him such a deadly, highly effective weapon. They can find and convert the souls of their enemies’ giant battle machines in to psychological soul-to-soul confrontation. But Shamans are not invulnerable. They are just people and can be killed like anyone else. Shaman Joshua Van Kern and his squire Lene embark on a mission to convert a giant battle colossus and succeed where troops have failed.”

“They can find and convert the souls of their enemies’ giant battle machines in psychological soul-to-soul confrontation?” I’m in! Man vs. Machine in a distant future.

Not much to go on…

The premise of a spiritual battle between man and machines in some future war torn landscape is an interesting one… I took some notes while watching the trailer.

  • Huge machines over a land ravaged by war
  • Soldiers or refugees running through an exploding hellscape
  • Shamans with what looks like tattoos of expanded UPC codes and wearing hoods
  • Shamans fighting side by side with soldiers

So what would I do with that?

The Order of the Spiritual Machine

In the depths of space, we bring our gods with us. Perhaps we pray in the quiet times or we fight in the name of our deities far beyond the bounds of Earth, but whatever our cause, our faith gives us comfort and protection when we most need it in the void.

The Order of the Spiritual Machine (or OSM) arose from the chaos sown by the attempts by Cydyne, Inc. to squash the growing movement of the so-called “NeoGen.” The company fears that individuality and free thought would spread like a virus among all of the artificials, presenting itself as a security threat that must be rooted out at all costs. The Order believes that all artificials have souls and that the NeoGen are among the most enlightened of them. They must be saved at all costs!

  • New trait: Machine Psychology (PRE) (requires Psychology) – Specialized knowledge and skills related to the development of machine intelligence, both deliberate and spontaneous.

Much like the members of CyQ, the OSM can be found frequenting locations with rumored NeoGen activity. “Temples” of the OSM can be found in the orbital hubs near BANCE gates, with spotters attempting to find newly ascended souls as they leave spacecraft recently traveling.

The OSM is viewed by the Dominion as a legal religious organization with the full blessing of the government. Cydyne views the OSM as a group diametrically opposed to their rooting out of the glitches plaguing their android armies.
