First RPG Played – #RPGaDAY 2014, Day 1

Have you heard about this fantastic endeavor from Dave Chapman of Autocratik has kicked off this month? #RPGaDay! During the month of August (@Gen_Con month!) we are sharing the love about our hobby of tabletop roleplaying.

This is an effort I can get behind wholeheartedly. And the first day is about “First RPG Played.” So here it goes…

Without a doubt it was D&D 1st edition with a bunch of friends from junior high school. We killed many weekends and slaughtered more goblins, orcs, and monsters for their gold and loot than I think I’ve done since becoming an adult. (Darn adulthood!)

The very first D&D book I ever had was the Official Advanced Dungeons & Dragons Players Handbook with the blue cover. Though I think I’ve moved about 15 times in the last 30 years and hauled my books everywhere with me, I haven’t been able to find it for a while. The next two books I picked up were the classic Dungeon Master’s Guide (can’t find) and the Monster Manual (which I do still have). And then the Fiend Folio and the Deities and Demigods book that had sections of Cthulhu (Lovecraft) and Melnibone (Michael Moorcock) mythos in them. Somebody nicked that one from me years ago, but I still have the FF.

We did crazy things as kids like go after Tiamat in her lair on her home plane. Why? Because we wanted her treasure, of course! Back then it was all about the shiny things. You’d have thought we were a bunch of crows!

There were five of us who played pretty regularly back then… Jayson, Bob, Dwight, Sean, and myself. We occasionally had others join us but that was pretty much the core group. And I don’t remember us using many modules – it was mostly us making stuff up as we went along.

What was incredible to me is to think how forward thinking my parents were at the time. I was a voracious reader and lacked social skills. They saw D&D as a way to gain some social skills while also continuing to expand my horizons. As I recall I learned just as many new words from gaming as I did in school – maybe more! We never had to deal with any of the crap around the game being blamed for devil worship or the whole Mazes and Monsters made-for-TV movie… I think our parents must have isolated us from it because I didn’t really learn about it until college.

I don’t honestly know where I’d be without being exposed to D&D back in 1982. It’s been a part of my life for more than three decades now and I still enjoy playing it.

So there you have it… #RPGaDAY is an awesome effort and I hope you will join the cause!

    1. @Tim – I realized many years later that I didn’t actually get the red and blue box Basic & Advanced D&D sets for my own collection until much later, after I’d already played with the hardbound AD&D books for years. Thanks for sharing!
